Construction on 30 new islands to be given to Chinese companies

Male (Maldives) – After the anti-Indian President Mohamed Muizzu won with majority in the Maldivian parliamentary elections, he is now set to change the Constitution, according to the sources. Through this, he is going to award construction contracts to Chinese companies on 30 new islands in the Maldives. Chinese companies are going to build 1,000 apartments here in the first phase. These 30 new islands have been created by building bridges across the sea.

Former pro-India President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, was against construction on the new islands. He warned that the Maldives could become the world’s first environmental refugee country due to rising water levels.

To raise Rs 4,200 crore through Islamic bonds

Maldives has a foreign debt of Rs 54,186 crores. According to the World Bank, by the year 2026, Maldives will have to repay an estimated Rs 9 trillion in foreign debt. For this, President Muizzu has planned to raise Rs 4,200 crore through Islamic bonds. For this, Islamic bonds will be purchased from Turkey and Saudi Arabia.
