Why no mention of Tamil Hindu refugees from Sri Lanka, in CAA : Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda

Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda

Bengaluru (Karnataka) – No discussions were held on CAA introduced by the Union Government in the cabinet of ministers, but in my personal opinion, it would not be proper to keep Tamil Hindu refugees from Sri Lanka to leave out from the purview of this Act, stated State Revenue Minister Byre Gowda while speaking to reporters here. He also said that people coming from the neighbouring countries are given citizenship under this Act but refugees from Sri Lanka have been left out although Tamils who went to Sri Lanka to earn money were adversely affected in the strife between ‘Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE) and Sri Lanka. I am not in support of LTTE or Sri Lanka, but the innocent people were the victims of this strife. After such a struggle in Sri Lanka, Tamil Hindus took shelter in many States including Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and I feel they are the most exploited people. Why has the Union Government deprived Tamil Hindu refugees of the benefits under CAA ?

What is CAA ?

The Citizenship Act 1955 was amended in 2019 under which people coming from Islamic countries viz. Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, who were religious minorities in their respective countries such as Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians, will be given citizenship of India. It is, however, necessary that they should have come to India before 31st December 2014.

Editorial Perspective

Why the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) was not passed during the Congress regime ? Who had stopped Congress ? Even now, Congress is not supporting CAA but only raising questions.
