New Delhi – These days drinking water from plastic bottle has become a norm. It is widespread among school children to office-going officers and staff. However, a study has revealed that drinking water from plastic bottles is harmful for human heart. This has come to light from a new study of the University of Campania in Italy. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found microplastics (fine plastic particles) in the arteries of an individual. According to the latest study, 1 litre plastic bottle carries approximately 2,40,000 plastic particles of 7 types of plastics.
Risk of heart attack increases by four and a half times
This research also says that cling films (a type of plastic), mostly used to wrap vegetables or fish ordered online, are also harmful for human heart. The microplastics present in this material floats in the blood of an individual, which may increase the risk of heart attack by four and a half times.

In only three years, one may suffer heart attack
During the research, out of 304 patients more than 50% patients’ blood had a presence of microplastics. These microplastics get deposited in an individual’s carotid artery and the main arteries carrying blood. Carotid artery carries blood to the neck, face and brain, not only that, these microplastics also create blockage in the heart and increase the risk of heart attack in three years.
Here are the findings of the research
1. These micro plastics are more harmful for the patients of high blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking, obesity, and diabetes.
2. Attack on immune system.
3. Prolonged burning sensation which, after some time damages the lining of blood vessels, cause watery eyes and create blockages in the heart.
What could be the alternative to microplastics ?
- Choose items wrapped in natural packaging.
- Use a reliable water filter.
- Buy vegetables from the vendor, do not order online.
- Instead of plastic, use glass, steel, or silicon.
- Do not keep food in a plastic container to heat in a microwave.
