More than 5 crore cases pending in the Indian Courts

New Delhi – Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Union Law Minister, said while answering a question in the Lok Sabha that there are more than 5 crore cases pending in the country’s Courts.

Information given by the law Minister –

1. The pendency in the country’s Courts, till the 1st of December, is 5,00,85,856. Of these, more than 61 lakh cases are pending in the 25 High Courts of India.

2. There are 80,000 cases pending in the Supreme Court of India. On the 1st of July the pendency figure was 69,766 which has increased to more than 80,000 by 1st of December. From March 2020 to July 2023 the pending cases increased by 10,000.

3. The total number of appointed Judges are 26,568. There are 34 judges in the Supreme Court. The number of judges in the High Court is 1,114. The District and lower Courts have 25,420 judges.

4. In the Supreme Court till the 15th of June 2023, 1,80,000 cases were heard through ‘video conferencing’.  The SC finished more than 1,82,000 cases.

Editorial Perspective

Everyday there is an increase in the cases pending in the Courts of the country. It is necessary that a collective effort is made by the administration, judiciary and the public to take the cases to completion !
