Montreal (Canada) – A McGill University study has concluded that ‘Listening to moving or bittersweet songs can reduce physical pain’.
The people involved in this research were asked to listen to their favourite songs. The researchers found that those who listened to sad songs experienced a 10% reduction in pain perception. This is because the brain prioritises the sensation of song over pain signals. The body perceives pain, but the consciousness does not transmit the messages that make the mind aware of pain.
Music helps relieve feelings of anxiety and depression by lowering stress, heart rate and blood pressure and stimulating dopamine hormone production in the brain. Music also promotes better sleep and increases stamina.
