Ahmedabad (Gujarat) – Gujarat High Court gave the reference of the Skanda Puran in one of its hearings. The parents of a minor victim of rape desired that the resultant pregnancy should be aborted. To this the Court said that ‘the girl’s parents cannot pressurise the girl to abort’, but at the same time the Court opined that ‘if the girl wants to abort her pregnancy she may do so’. Justice Dave had earlier quoted the Manusmruti in the hearing.
‘No Life Giver In World Like The Mother’: Justice Samir Dave of Gujarat High Court recently invoked a Hindu religious text ‘Skanda Purana’ to emphasise the value of a mother in society, while permitting a 17-year-old girl to abort her 19-week pregnancy#GujaratHighCourt pic.twitter.com/dtCnvT1m8l

Justice Dave had said, the mother’s status is supreme in the Hindu Culture and tradition. In the Skanda Puran it is said, ‘नास्ति मातृसमा छाया नास्ति मातृसमा गतिः। नास्ति मातृसमं त्राणं नास्ति मातृसमा प्रपा॥’ which means there is no one in the world a best shield, support, protection, life giver like the mother. This means no one can give life and protection like a mother. No one in the world can better her contribution.
