Islamabad (Pakistan) – Pakistan’s national airline ‘Pakistan International Airlines’ (PIA) is on the verge of shutdown. It needs Pak Rs 636 crore to operate normally. PIA has a debt of Pak Rs 20,000 crore that is more than 5 times of its total assets.

1. At present, 5 out of 13 leased aircrafts have been grounded and 4 more planes are likely to be grounded. Flights have been grounded in several Gulf countries due to non-refuelling. The United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have banned the PIA planes from flying.
2. According to Pakistan’s Geo News, the Director of PIA has said that if the emergency fund is not disbursed in time, all flights of the airline will have to be cancelled by 15th September.
3. Earlier, PIA had said, ‘Boeing and Airbus may stop supply of aircraft spare parts by mid-September’. This is because PIA has not paid the previous dues of these establishments.
4. According to ‘Pakistan Today’, PIA flights to Saudi Arabia and Dubai airports were grounded due to the inability to pay for fuel, but these flights were resumed after the PIA gave a written assurance of payment.
5. Pakistan, facing an economic crisis, has decided to lease Islamabad Airport. Pakistan’s Aviation Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique gave this information in Parliament.
