Muslim woman in Assam faces death threats after embracing Hindu Dharma

Chief Minister orders inquiry

Dibrugarh (Assam) – Alima Akhtar, a female doctor hailing from Dibrugarh, has courageously stepped forward with deeply troubling claims of receiving death threats from her own family and members of her community following her decision to embrace Hindu Dharma. Alima, who serves as a medical professional at Assam Medical College, chose to share her harrowing ordeal via a video posted on social media. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma promptly acknowledged the gravity of her situation upon viewing the video and swiftly ordered an immediate inquiry, coupled with decisive action.

1. Alima Akhtar has asserted that she felt compelled to leave Islam due to immense pressure to marry an older Maulavi (Islamic cleric).

2. On the other hand, Alima’s brother Vakil Khan reported his sister as missing to the Police and tweeted this information. Responding to his concerns, the Director General of Police of Assam informed Khan about Alima’s video and assured Khan that appropriate action would be taken against those who threatened Alima.

3. On the statement of the Director General of Police, Vakil Khan said, “I do not accept her statements in that video. This incident should be investigated. The Police had promised to find my sister but it has not been observed”.
