Lucknow (UP) – UP MLA Dr Rajeshwar Singh has written a letter to the Union Law Minister and the Chief Minister of the State, Yogi Adityanath, demanding that desecration of religious texts be made a crime. Dr Singh wrote in the letter that, “There have been instances in the recent past of religious texts being attacked or ridiculed or desecrated by certain groups. Any such incident attacks the religious sentiments of the population and consequently, disrupts the social fabric of the nation, as has been witnessed in India and other countries many times. It is submitted that the existing protection in the current legal regime is insufficient to protect these religious texts and there is a need for strengthening the existing legal framework to meet these challenges.” Hence, the Government should pass legislation for the same.
