New Delhi – Divorce rate has increased multifold in the country. The Supreme Court observed that love marriage is the main reason behind this. A hearing was held in the Supreme Court on 17th May regarding a divorce case. A Bench of Justices BR Gavai and Sanjay Karol, while hearing a transfer petition arising out of a matrimonial dispute, made this observation as the case was related to love marriage. The Court said that most divorces are arising from love marriages only.
The Supreme Court proposed the husband and wife to settle the dispute through mediation. But both husband and wife refused it. That time, the judge stated that marriage is a relationship of contentment and selfless love.

The Court further said that several factors need to be considered while granting divorce such as – the period of time the parties had cohabited after marriage, when the parties had last cohabited, and the nature of allegations made by the parties against each other and their family members.
