Those who are active in politics cannot be trustees of temples !

An important decision by the Kerala High Court regarding temples coming under the ‘Malabar Devaswam Board’

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala)  – The Kerala High Court has given an important judgment regarding the temples that come under the ‘Malabar Devaswam Board’ in Kerala. In its judgment given on 21st February, the Court said that people involved in active politics cannot be appointed as ‘non- hereditary trustees’ of temples. The Court passed this judgment based on a petition filed against the appointment of two Communist Party workers and one worker of the ‘DYFI’ as trustees of the Pookkottukalikavu Temple in Palakkad District under the Malabar Devaswam Board.

1. Pankajakshan, an activist appointed as a trustee, stated that the ‘DYFI is not a political organisation’ but the Court rejected this argument and stated that the work of the DYFI is political in nature.

2. On the other hand, Ashok Kumar was the secretary of a local committee of the Communist Party, while Ratheesh was the secretary within a branch of the party. Both were active workers of the party even though they were not holding any posts while being appointed as Trustees. Hence, the Court ruled that the appointment of the above 2 members was inappropriate.

Editorial viewpoint

In fact, only the devotees of the temple can be given the right to be the trustees of the temple. Now Hindus should demand strongly with the Government and the Judiciary.
