Tomato are Rs 500 per kg, while onions are Rs 300 per kg in flood-devastated Pakistan

A great increase in prices in Pakistan due to the Floods

Islamabad (Pakistan) – While more than one thousand individuals have died in the floods, affecting 70% of Pakistan, there is a loss of thousands of Rupees to the Government. This has given a tremendous hike in the prices. There is a huge rise in the prices of vegetables in Lahore. Tomatos are priced at 500 Pakistani Rupess per kilo. Onion is 300 rupees per kilo, while lemons are sold at rupees 400 per kilo. In Pakistan, the normal price used to be tomato Rs.80, Onion Rs.61, but the private retailers are selling vegetables at 5 times that price. The traders are justifying the hike in prices by saying that as they are purchasing from the wholesale market at a higher price they too have to increase their prices.

The floods in Sindh and Punjab have completely destroyed the sugarcane and cotton crops in the states, while marginally destroying the Kharif crop of onion, tomato, and chillies. About 20 Lakh tons of wheat stored in the warehouses of Sindh are spoilt. This has created a danger to the country’s food security.
