Panaji (Goa) – Goa has become a prominent place of prostitution. According to a report by the NGO, ‘Anyay Rahit Zindagi’, young girls and women are being brought into Goa from 23 States and from 8 foreign countries for prostitution. The report has been prepared after a 2-day event organised to curb prostitution.
This event was jointly organised by ‘Anyay Rahit Zindagi’ and ‘Women and Child Welfare Department of Goa’. The report suggests several measures to curb prostitution – It is necessary to provide modern facilities to investigation agencies, act against cyber-crime, use CCTV wherever necessary, proper coordination between the place from where the young girls or women are brought to Goa for prostitution and the Goa’s investigation mechanism.
To prevent young women from getting into the business, investigation agencies in the respective States should work together to take measures to protect them, rehabilitate the victims who have been liberated from prostitution, and punish the criminals.
A large racket of prostitutes is in the country and abroad. Only middlemen are apprehended in such activity; however, the main handlers in the case are always behind the scenes. Finding the main wire-puller of the case poses a major challenge to the investigation agencies. In many places, young girls or women are being forced into this profession due to poverty. Therefore, employment generation will also hinder the business to some extent.
This report will be submitted to the respective States and Government of Goa.
