Mumbai – The Maharashtra Government has decided to grant ₹50 lakh each to 308 madarasas in the State under the ‘Dr Zakir Husain Madarasa Modernisation Scheme’. The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti has strongly opposed this decision and demanded that the grants be immediately discontinued and all madarasas in the State be converted into general schools. On 16 April 2026, the organisation submitted a memorandum in this regard to the office of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
🚨 Convert Madrasas into Regular Schools: HJS Opposes ₹50 Lakh Grant Scheme@HinduJagrutiOrg has opposed the Maharashtra govt’s decision to grant ₹50 lakh each to 308 madrasas under the Dr. Zakir Hussain Madrasa Modernisation Scheme.

In the memorandum, the organisation stated that the Assam Government has converted all government-aided madarasas into regular secondary schools, and Maharashtra should take similar action. On the lines of Uttar Pradesh, the State Government should also conduct an immediate survey of all madarasas and investigate financial irregularities and the presence of bogus student enrolment. It further stated that providing government funds exclusively to institutions of a particular religion, while neglecting Hindu Vedapathashalas and Warkari educational institutions, amounts to a violation of Articles 14 and 15 of the Constitution of India. According to the organisation, this results in misuse of taxpayers’ money and constitutes injustice towards them.
Agitations to be staged across the State
The organisation stated that the Education Department and intelligence agencies should regularly verify what kind of religious instruction is imparted in madarasas and whether it is conducive to national integration. It also demanded that the State Government pursue the Union Government to remove provisions such as Section 30(B) of the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) Act. If madarasas require funds for modernisation, they should utilise income generated from Waqf Board properties spanning thousands of acres or funds collected through zakat.
The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti has warned that if the State Government does not take these demands seriously and does not withdraw what it terms a discriminatory decision against Hindus, it will launch intense statewide agitations.
