New Delhi – The Rouse Avenue Court has sentenced former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar to life imprisonment in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi. The victims had demanded a death sentence for him. This case pertains to the murder of Jaswant Singh and his son, Tarundeep Singh, in Sarasvati Vihar during the riots. Sajjan Kumar is already serving a life sentence in Tihar Jail for his involvement in another riot-related case.

Two More Cases Against Sajjan Kumar

Sajjan Kumar was found guilty in a case where a Gurudwara was set on fire after the murder of five Sikhs in Palam Colony, Delhi Cantonment. On 17 December, 2018, the Delhi High Court sentenced him to life imprisonment.

The Rouse Avenue Court acquitted him in a case related to the murder of  of three Sikhs in Sultanpuri, Delhi.

What Were the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots ?

On October 30, 1984, the then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguard, triggering widespread riots in Delhi. The Nanavati Commission was set up to investigate the violence. According to its report, 587 cases were registered in Delhi alone, in which 2,733 people were killed. Across India, the death toll was close to 3,500. Out of the total cases, around 240 were closed, while 250 cases resulted in the acquittal of the accused.
