New Delhi – You cannot call any part of the country Pakistan. This is against the fundamental principle of unity of the country, chief justice Dhananjay Chandrachud passed an order for the judge. The Karnataka high court judge, V. Shreeshanand had referred to a Muslim-majority area of Bengaluru as ‘Pakistan’. The Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of this and held hearing of the matter. At that time, Chief Justice Chandrachud passed the above order. The hearing was adjourned after Justice Srisanand apologised to the Supreme Court. The live telecast of the high court proceedings was also stopped after a video of Srisananda’s statement was circulated on social media. That too was allowed to be started by the court.
The Chief Justice said –
1. Careless comments express the biased views of a person, especially those made on a particular gender or community. During the hearing, the Judge should avoid such comments which are against or harmful to any community.
2. We are deeply concerned about comments made on community and gender. Such comments create negative images. They also affect the court and the entire judiciary.
3. In the electronic age, judges and advocates should make appropriate choices and adjust their behavior according to this era.
