New Delhi – The Supreme Court on Thursday blasted the Kolkata Police for its handling of the rape and murder of a 31-year-old woman trainee doctor at the city’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Justice JB Pardiwala, who was part of the three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, pointed out the laxity of the Kolkata Police.
“The entire procedure followed by your state is something which I have not come across in the 30 years of my life,” Justice Pardiwala said during the hearing. Earlier, the investigation report submitted by the CBI in the court so far stated that the Police tampered with the evidence at the crime scene.
Doctors should return to work- Appeals the CJI
All over the country doctors are protesting against this case. During the hearing, Chief Justice DhananjayChandrachud said, “I know the condition of the hospitals. I am myself sleeping on the ground of a Government hospital when one of my family members is sick. We have received many emails from doctors saying that they are under a lot of pressure. It is not good for doctors to work 48 or 36 hours. We will add it to our order today. Patients are waiting for you. So back to work”. The Chief Justice also assured that ‘No action will be taken against you after returning to work’.
Following an appeal in the Supreme Court, the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) has decided to temporarily suspend its strike in response to the rape and murder of a medical student in Kolkata. The strike, which lasted 11 days, was initially sparked by concerns about safety and justice for the victim.
