The Indian app ‘Koo’, created to compete with ‘X’, collapses

Founders of the app announced that Koo will be shutting down due to ‘financial difficulties and unpredictable market environment’

New Delhi – An app named ‘Koo’ was launched to counter the foreign social media ‘X'(then Twitter). BJP also promoted this app in the year 2022. Hence, millions of patriotic Indians started using this app; but due to the lack of capital required to support the globally dominant X, as well as the failure of merger negotiations with other large establishments, the decision to close the ‘Koo’ app had to be made. On 3rdJuly, the owners of the establishment posted a statement on the social media link kooapp.com that the app was being shut down. ‘Koo’, the Indian social media platform rivalling X, is shutting down due to financial difficulties and an unpredictable market. Despite its achievements, the high cost of maintaining technology services and failed partnership talks led to this decision.

Koo’ app is the only competitor of X

“We launched Koo with the aim of bringing people together based on their native language,” said the statement released by Koo app co-founders Aprameya Radhakrishna and Mayank Bidawatka. Most global products focus on English; but 80% of the world’s people speak over 1,000 languages other than English. We wanted to help these users connect and share ideas with each other in a more meaningful way. We launched ‘Koo’ four years ago in March 2020 before the Corona pandemic. Over the past four years, ‘Koo’ has received a lot of love from the public, producers, dignitaries and media around the world. This app was the only competitor of ‘X’. At its peak, Koo had around 2.1 million daily active users and 10 million monthly users, including over 9,000 VIPs. Despite their success, financial challenges and a prolonged funding winter forced them to scale down. The founders highlighted the unpredictable capital market and high technology costs as major issues. The app had 6 crore downloads, 8,000 super paid accounts, as well as 100 publisher accounts. We have tried hard for the last two years to raise the necessary capital to keep this social media running regularly, but it has not been successful. So we are grateful to the millions of ‘Koo’ users who have helped us; but with a sad heart we have to close ‘Koo’.
