India will definitely get permanent membership of the UNSC – EAM Dr S Jaishankar

EAM Dr S Jaishankar

Surat (Gujarat) – India will definitely get permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council, said the Indian Minister of External Affairs Dr S Jaishankar in a programme here. Jaishankar was answering to a question asked by the attendees. India has been striving for permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council for many years. Many other countries have supported India; but China is blocking it.

Dr Jaishankar said,

1. The United Nations was founded about 80 years ago. 5 countries namely China, France, Russia, Britain and the US decided to become permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. At that time, 50 countries were independent in the world. Later their number increased to 193; but these 5 countries retained their control over the United Nations; but now, they need to be told to change this arrangement, which is weird.

2. Few countries agree on India’s permanent membership, some sincerely express their opinion; but there are some countries which do things behind our back. This has been going on for years. That should change now. There has been a worldwide feeling that India should get permanent membership. This sentiment continues to grow. We will definitely achieve it; but nothing is achieved without hard work. We have to work hard.

3. India, Japan, Germany and Egypt have jointly submitted a proposal to the United Nations. So now this thing can go further; but we must keep pressing.

4. The United Nations was in turmoil over the Ukraine war and the invasion of Gaza. No consensus could be reached on this. I think as this feeling grows, our chances of getting a permanent place will increase.

Prime Minister Nehru put the interests of China ahead of India – Dr Jaishankar

India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru gave priority to the interests of China over India, said Minister of External Affairs Dr S Jaishankar while answering a question.

1. Dr Jaishankar said that in 1950, then Home Minister Sardar Patel had warned Nehru about China. Patel had told Nehru, ‘For the first time we are facing a dual front of China and Pakistan, a situation that has never happened before.’

2. Patel also told Nehru that he did not believe what the Chinese were saying. The Chinese seem to have different intentions and we should be very careful in this matter.

3. In response, Nehru told Patel that his suspicion was unwarranted. It is impossible for anyone to invade India from the Himalayas. Nehru was completely dismissive of the Chinese threat. Everyone knows what happened after that.

Because of Nehru, China got the membership of the United Nations Security Council

Dr Jaishankar said that when there was a discussion about the permanent seat of the United Nations Security Council and this seat was offered to India, Nehru’s position was that we too have a right to this seat; but China should get it first.

Patel was opposed to taking the issue of Kashmir to the United Nations

Dr Jaishankar said on the Kashmir issue that Sardar Patel did not want to take the Kashmir dispute to the United Nations; but that is what Nehru did. Sardar Patel knew that the United Nations was biased.
