Hungarian President resigns due to protest against her decision to pardon an accused

President had pardoned a criminal accused of sexually abusing a child

Budapest (Hungary) – Hungarian President Katalin Novak has resigned from the country’s highest office. She resigned for committing the mistake of pardoning an individual accused of child sexual abuse. Novak said, “I apologise. I made a mistake. I forgave an individual accused of child sexual abuse. Many people have been saddened by this. I have always been and will always be in favour of the safety of children and families.”

In April 2023, a former Deputy Director of a Hungarian orphanage was pardoned in a sexual abuse case. He had helped his superior to suppress cases of child sexual abuse. After the President pardoned him, the protest started. The protest escalated on 9th February 2024. Many citizens were protesting outside President Novak’s house and demanding her resignation.
