New Delhi – Lakshadweep Island cannot bear the burden of large number of tourists. Hotels here have only 150 rooms and there are few flights to and from. Even if there’s an increase in both of these things, the tourists still cannot come here in large numbers; because the natural environment here is very sensitive and tourists will not be able to tolerate it, Lakshadweep MP Mohammed Faizal told a news channel representative. A few days ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appealed to Indians to visit Lakshadweep for tourism and then was criticised by Maldives for it. MP Faizal’s claim was based on this background.

Mohammed Faizal further said, “We are making developments here on the basis of ‘Integrated Island Management Plan’. The same scheme was mentioned in the report of Justice Raveendran committee. This committee was set up as per the order of the Supreme Court for the development of Lakshadweep. We do not want more tourists to suddenly come to Lakshadweep as advised by the committee. Our emphasis is on generating revenue through a small number of tourists. Those who want to come here will have to take care that they do not cause any harm to the environment.”
