Erode (TN) – A controversy has sparked, as the local Christians are demanding the name of the mountain of ‘Chennimalai Murugan Temple’ to be renamed as ‘Yesu Malla’ or ‘Kalvari Malla’. A protest is being held by ‘Hindu Munnani Sanghtena’ against this demand. This organisation claims that Christian organisations have the support of political leaders. Hindus have organised a padayatra (A journey undertaken on foot for religious, political, social or charitable purposes) against the demand for name change and this padayatra will reach the temple on 13th October.

The temple on this mountain is said to have a history of 3,000 years. There is a temple of Sri Mruga here. The area is predominantly Hindu; but prayers are organised unofficially for evangelisation by Christians in this area. For attending these prayers citizens come from outside the city. This creates tension here. During these prayers, the Hindu Deities are insulted through the loudspeakers.

On 17th September office bearers of the BJP and the Hindu Munnani organisation had come together to oppose these prayer meetings. A fight broke out between them. A complaint was registered against this in the Police station. After this incident, on 26th September, the Revolutionary Youth Front, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, MDMK, etc. organisations had taken out a march. This movement demanded the renaming of the mountain of Chennimalai Murugan Temple. This has led to the increase in tension.
