Kathmandu (Nepal) – 6 Chinese people who were caught smuggling 61 kg of gold from Nepal to India possessed Indian Aadhaar cards. They had also forged documents to prove their Nepali citizenship to be able to successfully smuggle gold to India.

Hemant Malla, former Director-General of Kathmandu Police, said, ‘Gold is smuggled into India through Nepal. Gold hidden in motorcycle parts reaches Nepal by air from Dubai and Hong Kong. Chinese smugglers receive it and the agents transport the gold to India. If checking is done at the border, they pretend to be Nepali or Indian by showing an Aadhaar card and escape. Officials have managed to seize as much as 88 kg of gold this time. This is only a tiny part of the whole business. 200 kg of gold is seized in a financial year’.

According to the Nepal Police, Indian nationals, especially women, are lured for a free pilgrimage and brought to Nepal. After the worship, they are gifted a ‘kachora’ (bowl of gold) and an ‘ankora’ (golden water pot). These gold vessels are coated with brass and copper water, so that no one can suspect.

Editorial Perspective

A law should be made to give death penalty to those who create or help to create fake Aadhaar cards, Voter IDs and other Government documents.
