Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) – According to the Kerala High Court, hereditary trustees or family members may work in temples as employees, but they must relinquish their trusteeship rights before the application process.
A Bench of Justice Anil K Narendran and Justice PG Ajithkumar, while hearing a petition, said hereditary trusteeship does not provide financial security. Therefore, such family members can look for employment in the temple and there is no legal bar to applying for the job under the Hindu Religious and Charitable Act.
The Shri Kurumba Bhagavathy temple here is a religious institution run by the Malabar Devaswom Board. One of the posts advertised in the temple’s job notification was for Kaval which is Kathanvedikaran, a permanent non-hereditary position. The Kerala High Court ruled while hearing a petition filed regarding the appointment of this post.
