(‘One country one election’ means that the election will be held at the same time for both the country’s Lok Sabha and the State Legislative Assemblies of the States)

New Delhi – The Union Government has called for a special session of the Parliament from 18th – 22nd September. There is a possibility that in this session of the Parliament, the Bill ‘One Country, one Election’ could be presented. The government has constituted an eight-member high-level Committee to examine it. Former President Ram Nath Kovind has been appointed as Chairman of the Committee.

The high-level Committee will examine and make recommendations for holding simultaneous elections of Lok Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies, Municipalities and Panchayats, considering the existing framework under the Constitution and other statutory provisions. It will examine and recommend if the amendments to the Constitution would require ratification by the States. They will also suggest a framework for synchronisation of elections, specifically, the phases and time frame within which simultaneous elections may be held. The Committee will also examine the logistics and manpower required, including EVMs and VVPATs for holding simultaneous elections. For this, public opinion will also be sought and considered.
