1.58 crore children in the 10-17 age group are drug addicts : Centre reports to Supreme Court

3.01 crore people consume intoxicants such as cannabis or intoxicants made from it

New Delhi – The Central Government has submitted shocking information to Supreme Court that 1.58 crore children in the age group of 10-17 years have some kind of addiction. The information was submitted, based on the survey conducted in this context, as per the directions of the Supreme Court.

Alcohol was stated to be the most consumed ingredient by Indians for stimulation and intoxication, followed by cannabis, hashish, opium, etc. About 16 crore people consume alcohol. More than 5.07 crore people consume cannabis or products made from cannabis, while about 2.26 crore people consume opium. All these people need immediate help to get rid of their addiction. Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati stated before the Bench of Justice K. M. Joseph and Justice B V Nagarathna while arguing for the Central Government that as per the order passed by the Supreme Court on the 14th of December 2016, the Government conducted a survey across the country to get the information on the consumption of intoxicants.

Statistics and other data !

1. Indian youth generally consume alcohol for stimulation and intoxication. 14.6% of the total population of this country (age group of 10-17 years) consume alcohol, i.e., 16 crore people consume alcohol.

2. Men consume more alcohol as compared to women. 1.6% of women and 27.3% of men consume alcohol.

3. Out of the above, 30% consume indigenous liquor, while 30% of Indian citizens consume foreign liquor.

Goa one of the States with highest number of citizens consuming alcohol !

In Chhattisgarh, Tripura, Punjab, Arunachal Pradesh, and Goa, the consumption of alcohol is the highest.
