‘Salaam Aarti’ in the Karnataka Temples to be called ‘Sandhya Aarti’ !

  • Hindu organisations demand is successful
  •  “Salaam Aarti” — a tradition started by Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan !

Melkote (Karnataka ) – The evening Aarti at the Historical Cheluvanarayanaswami temple and in many other temples has been since the time of Tipu Sultan called ‘Salaam Aarti’. After a request was made by Hindu Organisations it will be called ‘Sandhya Aarti’. The States Charity Department has given its consent to this. This matter had been pending with the department for the past 6 months. Now the final consent from Chief Minister Basavraj Bommai is awaited. These organisations had made a demand to the State government that the rituals being done under Tipu Sultan’s instructions be stopped. It was because of the donation received from Tipu Sultan for the Temples that the Aarti was called the ‘Salaam Aarti’

1. Kashekodi Suryanarayana Bhat, a Member of Dharmika Parishat, stated that the word “salaam” was imposed on Hindus during Tipu’s rule.

2. Bhat states that the ‘Salaam Aarti’ is done in Kukke Shree Subrahmanya Temple, Puttur Mahalingeshwara Temple, Kollur Sri Mookambika Temple, and other famous Temples. Mandya District Administration put forward the proposal for the change in name to the State Muzarai Commissioner.

‘We have brought back that which was prevalent earlier! ‘ said Minister Shashikala Jolle

The Muzarai Minister Shashikala Jolle said there were proposals and demands that the Pharsee words should be changed to Sanskrit words like ‘Mangal Aarti Namaskar’ or ‘Aarti Namaskar’ in Temples. Looking at History we have only brought back that which was prevalent before.

Editorial viewpoint

The Hindus feel, why such a demand has to be made by Hindu Organisations ? Why can’t the Government on its own do the expected thing !
