“Vijaydurg, a national monument that bears witness to the prowess of Chhatrapati Shivaji, is the identity of Maharashtra. However, this fort is in a very bad condition. Due to the falling portions at many places, any patriot will hang his head in shame. But the apathy of the Archeology Department, which is responsible for the conservation of the fort, is exasperating. Forts are our historical heritage in Maharashtra and Hindu Janajagruti Samiti has started a campaign for the conservation of all forts in Maharashtra. The Administration should take immediate action for the conservation of Vijaydurg Fort, else, Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, as well as admirers of Shivaji and fort-lovers will start a State-wide agitation on 29th December”, said Mr Sunil Ghanwat (State Organiser of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti for Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh) in a press conference. Adv. Asmita Sovani (of Hindu Vidhidnya Parishad) and Mr Sandesh Gawde (District Coordinator of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti for Sindhudurg) were present for the press conference.
Mr Ghanwat added that the importance of forts is unique in the ‘Hindavi Swarajya’ of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Government funds should be made available immediately for the repair, conservation and maintenance of such forts, and its work should be started immediately under the guidance of experts. The history of battles that took place and places related to Vijaydurg should also be included in the textbooks of schools. The history of Vijaydurg Fort should be published with photos on the websites of Sindhudurg District and the State Government.
