New Delhi – Some members of the Congress have opined that had I become the PM in 2004, the party might have averted the 2014 Lok Sabha drubbing. Though I do not subscribe to this view, I do believe that the party’s leadership lost political focus after my elevation as the President. While Sonia Gandhi was unable to handle the affairs of the party, Dr. Singh’s prolonged absence from the House put an end to any personal contact with other MPs, claimed former President Pranab Mukherjee in his memoir ‘The Presidential Years’. The book is to be released in the next month. He wrote this book before he breathed last. Some part of this book has now been made public. The book recounts late Pranab Mukherjee’s journey from his childhood spent in a remote village of Bengal to becoming President of India.

He believed that the Prime Minister of the country has a moral responsibility to govern the country. The overall state of the nation is reflective of the functioning of the PM and his administration. The advice to Dr Singh for saving the coalition took a toll on Governance, stated Mukherjee in his book.
