Moscow (Russia) – During Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Russia last year, President Vladimir Putin had promised that Indian soldiers fighting for Russia in Ukraine would be sent back; however, this has not happened. Another Indian has died in the Ukraine war. The soldier’s name was Binil T B (32 years old). Binil was a resident of Thrissur District in Kerala. Binil’s relative, Jain T K (27 years old), was also severely injured in the war in Ukraine. Binil reportedly died in a drone strike by Ukraine. This is the second death of an Indian soldier from Kerala fighting for the Russian military. These Indians are being sent to the front lines under the pretext of jobs as electricians, cooks, plumbers, and other support staff.

1. Binil’s relative Saneesh said that Binil’s wife was in contact with the Indian Embassy in Moscow. She has now been informed of Binil’s death.
2. Indian officials have confirmed that they received information from the Russian military regarding this incident.
3. Ajith Kolassery, chief executive officer of NORKA ROOTS, the state government agency for non-resident Keralites’ affairs, said that they had been trying to bring Binil back for several months, and do not know how many people from Kerala are still trapped in the Russian military. They only get information when only when such people make distress calls.
4. Binil and his relative TK had both been trying to return to India for the past few months but were not allowed to do so. Binil had also requested assistance from the Indian Embassy, but to no avail. In the last message, Binil said they are forced to move to the frontline of the war, which can further endanger their life.
5. The Indian Embassy has said that since the Russian military is not asking relieving them, they cannot offer any assistance.
Editorial PerspectiveRussia’s failure to send back Indians despite assurances is a betrayal of India’s trust. It is clear that India now needs to be cautious not only of the United States but also of Russia ! |
