Tehran (Iran) – Iran has arrested 24 people in connection with the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Among the arrested are several Iranian intelligence officers, military officers, and guest house staff. Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s newly appointed President Masoud Pezeshkian and was staying in a guest house where he was killed in a bomb blast. The Iran Revolution Guards Corps, responsible for security in the area, is implicated in the incident.
1. British daily ‘The Telegraph’ has claimed in its report that Israel’s intelligence agency ‘Mossad’ is behind Haniyeh’s murder. The Mossad had hired an agent from Iran to assassinate Haniyeh.
2. Bombs were planted in three different rooms of the guest house two months ago with the help of Iranian military officials. The Mossad planned to kill Haniyeh during the funeral of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. However, the plan was postponed due to the large crowd at the event.
3. After this, bombs were planted in three rooms of the guest house by the operatives, who then fled the country. However, one accomplice remained in Iran. Iranian officials have found CCTV footage of the bombs being planted in the guest house.
4. An Iranian military official stated that operatives from the Ansar al-Mahdi unit were recruited by Mossad for the job. During the investigation, bombs were found in the remaining two rooms. This incident highlights a major security flaw.
