Bring back Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s golden throne from Britain : AAP MP Raghav Chadha

AAP MP Raghav Chadha demands in the Rajya Sabha

Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s golden throne

New Delhi – AAP MP Raghav Chadha has demanded in Rajya Sabha that the 19th-century golden throne of Maharaja Ranjit Singh be brought back to India from Britain. Chadha urged the Union Government to negotiate with the British Government to facilitate the return of the throne, currently housed at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Raghav Chadha gave information about the throne

The famous goldsmith Hafiz Muhammad Multani of the 19th century built a magnificent throne between 1805 and 1810. This throne is different from European royal furniture. A thick foil of gold covers this throne. The lower part of the throne has a design of lotus petals, symbolising purity. This throne was a symbol of glory in the Maharaja’s court. In 1849, the British took over Punjab. At that time, the East India Company claimed this throne. The throne was sent to London to be housed in the East India Company’s museum on Leadenhall Street. At that time, jewellery, silver furniture and weapons were auctioned in Lahore. After the division of the museum collection in 1879, the throne was sent to the South Kensington Museum. It is now known as the Victoria and Albert Museum. Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s legacy and his contribution to history should be included in school textbooks. This will help the students to know more about him.
