Rail travel unsafe for women at night in Mumbai : Railway Police survey

Mumbai – A survey conducted by the DGP (Railways) office concluded that women are not safe traveling at night by train in Mumbai, the financial capital of India. The DGP office conducted a survey between 1 st and 31 st March to record the experiences, problems, and recommendations of the women travelling on the Mumbai’s suburban section. 3,000 women participated in the online questionnaire consisting of 21 questions available in Marathi, Hindi and English language. Many women said they felt unsafe traveling past 9 p.m., about 28% said they felt unsafe after 10 p.m., 40% stated they felt unsafe after 11 p.m., and 42% said they felt unsafe travelling by the local train after midnight. Many gave their recommendations and opinion about the solutions and means to make suburban local travel safe.
