Washington (USA) – A recent survey indicate that over half of American citizens are currently dissatisfied with their personal lives. The happiness level among Americans stands at 47%, a marginal increase from 46% in 2011-12. The reason for a low happiness level than was attributed to 2008-09’s terrible recession. The survey was conducted by the research and management consulting firm ‘Gallup’.

The survey statistics are as follows:

Percentage of US Citizens Current state
47% Extremely satisfied
31% Little satisfied
11% Little unsatisfied
9% Extremely unsatisfied

According to a 2020 Gallup study, 65% of Americans reported feeling happy. The study suggests that recent global unrest, economic instability, and the pursuit of greater aspirations are key factors contributing to people’s discontent.

Unmarried Americans exhibit lower levels of happiness compared to their married counterparts

The study notes that individuals earning an annual income exceeding Rs 90 lakhs are the happiest, constituting 58% of this group. (It is essential to scrutinise the survey’s definition of happiness, considering that real happiness entails maintaining a positive state of mind regardless of external circumstances – Editor). Unmarried people are found to be less happy than married people. 38% singles were found to be happy, in contrast to 57% of the married
people who were happy.

Editorial Perspective

Those who believe that money and material development alone bring happiness, should recognise that this perception is merely an illusion ! Despite millions of people in India living in impoverished conditions, they often find greater contentment than wealthy Americans. This paradox can be attributed to their deep-rooted connection to Hindu Dharma and their commitment to leading a religious life. Consequently, thousands of westerners are increasingly seeking solace and guidance from the Indian saints.
