London (Britain) – A 16-year-old girl has been gang-raped in Britain for the first time in a virtual reality game, i.e. ‘Metaverse’. According to the British Police, the victim has alleged that some unknown individuals gang-raped her virtual body in a virtual reality game. She was not physically injured while playing the game; but according to the officials, her mind has been affected as deeply as a real rape victim. The victim was wearing a virtual reality headset. As there is currently no law on ‘virtual rape’ in Britain, the case will be difficult to investigate.
In 2021, Facebook’s parent company ‘Meta’ created a virtual reality game called ‘Horizon Worlds’. A virtual body of the users can be created in this game. The virtual body of others can also be seen while playing this game. So far, many cases related to sexual crimes have come to light in the ‘Horizon Worlds’ on a virtual level. In this case, the spokesperson of ‘Meta’ said that such crimes have no place on our platform. To avoid this, we have created a ‘Personal Boundary’ for our users. It keeps unknown people a few feet away from the user’s virtual body.
Such individuals can be more dangerous in the real world – Britain’s Home Secretary
Britain’s Home Secretary James Cleverley said that today’s young generation is largely immersed in virtual reality, which is why such things affect them deeply. This is a very serious matter. Such incidents also show that individuals who can do this to a girl in virtual reality can be more dangerous in the real world.
What is the ‘Metaverse’ ?
Metaverse is a virtual world, where anyone can enter virtually. It has the feeling that he/she is physically present at that place. It can create your own virtual body. Such virtual people can travel, shop, meet other people, buy property and do everything they can in the real world. Here ‘Crypto’ is used as currency. To experience the ‘Metaverse’, users need devices like V.R. headset and controllers.
The first virtual rape happened in 1993
The first case of virtual rape came to light in 1993. Then in 2022, within hours of entering Facebook’s ‘Metaverse’, a female researcher was raped by another virtual user present there. The female researcher said that the rape took place in a virtual world, yet she felt as though she had been raped in the real world.
