Exports are largely being done to African countries !
New Delhi – According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, which reports on arms exports, India has become the 23rd largest arms exporter in the world during the period 2017-2021. India has become an important country in meeting maritime and air security, as well as other defence requirements of African countries. Mauritius, Mozambique and Seychelles bought the most arms from India in the 5 years from 2017 to 2021. This information has been published by ‘Indian Exim Bank’ in one of its reports. The report was released at a regional conference organised by ‘CII’ and ‘Exim Bank’ on increasing cooperation between India and African countries.
1. India is trying to create a safe maritime environment for many other countries including 9 coastal African countries in the Indian Ocean region. It includes coastal African countries namely Kenya, Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, and Somalia.
2. According to this report, India is providing defence assistance to African countries as per their requirements. This includes building up their military capabilities, training them and providing them with humanitarian assistance.
3. Military vehicles manufactured by Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland are being exported to African countries.
4. By 2025, India has set a target to increase defence exports to $500 crore (₹40,000 crore).
