Christians celebrate Christmas at Shri Padmanabha Swamy Temple

Entered the Temple with permission to only dance !

Shri Padmanabha Swamy Temple

Thiruvananthapuram – Andhra Pradesh Christians celebrated Christmas by lighting candles at Shri Padmanabha Swamy Temple.

‘Kuchipudi Dance Troupe’ led by Ramachandramurthy, a converted Christian from Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, requested for permission to perform at the Temple.

On that day, he had also been granted permission to worship in the Shri Padmanabha Swamy Temple. Christians from Vijayawada were allowed to use the Temple porch because the Temple managers considered them Hindus by name. After obtaining permission, the Christians lit candles everywhere in the Temple porch and started celebrating Christmas in the name of dancing.

1. As soon as the Hindu devotees realised this, they protested. The Temple’s security personnel extinguished the candles after the protest. Devotees lamented that the sanctity of the Temple had been violated.

2. Candles are prohibited in Shri Padmanabha Swamy Temple. It is only after strict vetting that devotees are allowed into the Temple under high security.

3. The Temple administration is accused of intentionally allowing the violation of rules. Hindu devotees claimed that such things happen as a result of hiring atheists in the Temple administration. A question raised by devotees in this regard is : If the Government cannot protect the rituals and traditions in Hindu temples, why does it insist on keeping the management of temples to itself ?

Editorial Viewpoints

  • Strict action should be taken against the Christians who have violated the sanctity of the Hindu Temple.
  • Such incidents are taking place because temples are under Government administration. This is why, temples should be handed over to devout Hindus to manage.
