India behind the floods in Bangladesh : Bangladesh alleges

Protests against India in Bangladesh

Flood situation in Bangladesh

Dhaka (Bangladesh)/New Delhi – Several Districts in the eastern and south-eastern regions of Bangladesh are currently flooded. Protests against India have started with claims that India is responsible for the situation. It is alleged that the cause of the flood is India opening the gates of a dam on Gumti river in Tripura. There are accusations that India’s ‘flood bomb’ is the reason for deluge in the area. A meeting was held at Dhaka University on the night of 21stAugust 2024, where India was warned. ‘India has brought both natural and political floods to Bangladesh. We will fight for independence in 2024 just as we fought in 1971,’ a threat was issued. On the other hand, the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry did not comment on the matter when questioned by journalists about the flood issue.

Student leader Hasnat Abdullah’s unfounded allegations

Hasnat Abdullah, Coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Bangladesh, claimed that the floods were caused due to India releasing water from the dam. “We are working towards the formation of a new country. Instead of helping as a neighbouring country, India is conspiring against us,” he alleged.

Flood caused due to unexpected water release : Interim Govt’s Information Advisor Nahid Islam

Nahid Islam, the Information Advisor to the Interim Government, stated that the release of water from the dam without prior notice caused the floods in Bangladesh.

India denies claims of flooding due to water release

The Indian Foreign Ministry responded to the allegations from Bangladesh, stating that rumours have spread in Bangladesh that the opening of the Dumboor Dam in Tripura caused the floods. The Ministry explained that the regions around Gumti River, which flows between India and Bangladesh, have experienced record rainfall this year, creating challenges on both sides. Flooding in rivers shared by both countries is a common problem, requiring cooperation from both nations. The Dumboor Dam is located more than 120 km from the Bangladesh border. It is a small dam (approximately 30 metres in height) that generates electricity, with 40 megawatts being supplied to Bangladesh through Tripura.

Editorial Perspective

Just as Pakistan blames India for all its crises, Bangladesh seems to be following the suit. To vent out their anger against India, a possibility of increase in the persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh cannot be denied.
