New Delhi – In a candid admission in an interview to the BBC, Twitter boss Elon Musk said that in India, social media rules are extremely strict and it is not possible for the platform to offer the same freedom of speech to Indian users that it does in the US and other Western countries. In the interview conducted on Twitter Spaces, Musk said, “The rules in India for what can appear on social media are quite strict, and we can’t go beyond the laws of a country. If we have a choice of either our people going to prison, or we comply with the laws, we’ll comply with the laws.”

Elon Musk talks like a free speech absolutist, although Twitter often blocks content in India. Asked about upholding freedom of speech in India, the Twitter boss said it was not possible because India has strict social media laws and he doesn’t want Indian Twitter employees to go to jail.
