New Delhi – Syed Waseem Rizvi has filed a petition in the Supreme Court (SC) asking for putting a ban on parties using religious names and symbols. The Supreme Court has issued a notice to Election Commission and Central Government and sought a response on the plea and fixed it for hearing on 18th October. Giving reference to the Constitution, Rizvi has pointed out the constitutional mandate of secularism.

1. This petition reference 2 political parties in which ‘Muslim’ appears in the Parties’ names. So also some flags of political parties have a crescent moon and stars on them. An example of the Indian Union Muslim League has been given. MLAs and MPs of this party represent Loksabha. In Kerala assembly also has its MLAs.
2. Adv Gaurav Bhatia stated that in a judgment in SR Bommai vs Union of India it was held by this Court that secularism is part of the basic feature.
3. Adv Gaurav Bhatia brought to the notice of the Court that to attract Muslim voters, many political parties keep their flag green with a crescent moon and stars. Likewise, leaders like Owaisi speaks openly about Muslims in public gatherings.
