SC rejects petitions challenging Victoria Gowri’s appointment

New Delhi – SC dismissed petitions challenging Victoria Gowri’s appointment as Madras High Court judge. Gowri is a general secretary of BJP Mahila Morcha. Gowri had said, “Like Islam is green terror, Christianity is white terror”. A group of 22 advocates of Madras H C said that they object to her anti-minority statements and claimed that her becoming the judge would be a ‘dent in the independence of the judiciary’. The Supreme Court clarified that this was not the first time a person with a political background was chosen as a High Court judge. The Court dismissed the plea after a hearing that lasted only 22 minutes. Interestingly, SC dismissed these petitions just as she took oath as Madras HC judge.
At the time of the hearing, Justice BR Gavai said, “I also have a political background before joining the Court as a judge, I have been a judge for 20 years and my political background has not come in my way.”
