Afghanistan will also block Pakistan’s water : A dam to be built on River Kunar !

It will generate 45 MW of electricity and irrigate 1.5 lakh acres.

Kabul (Afghanistan) – Following India’s footsteps Afghanistan is now preparing to build a dam to block water going to Pakistan. General Mubin, the military chief of the Taliban Government, inspected the dam to be built on the Kunar River. He said that water was their blood and they could not allow their blood to be drained from their veins. The dam would meet their electricity needs and through irrigation would help increase their agriculture production.

In this regard, Matiullah Abid, spokesman for the Taliban’s Ministry of Water and Energy, said that the survey and design of the dam was complete, but they need money to build it. If completed, the project will generate 45 megawatts of electricity and will provide water for irrigation to an estimated 1.5 lakh acres of agriculture.

There is no bilateral agreement between the two countries about water-sharing !

The 480-km-long Kunar River originates in the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan and joins the Kabul River near Jalalabad in Pakistan. It is an important water source for Pakistan. There is no formal bilateral agreement between Pakistan and Afghanistan on how to share the water from the Kabul River and its tributaries. According to Pakistani media, the building of a dam on the Kunar River could reduce the flow of the Kabul River by 16-17 per cent. That would have a major impact on Pakistan’s agriculture and water supply. India was already generating pressure on Pakistan due to the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty and the closure of the dam on the Chenab River. In such a situation, if a dam was built on the Kunar River, the situation would become more serious.

Editorial Perspective

It is certain that if Pakistan is surrounded and taught a lesson, it will come to its senses.
