Dhaka (Bangladesh) – Political instability has emerged in Bangladesh following the departure of Sheikh Hasina. Amid this turmoil, the military is being looked upon as a stabilizing force to prevent the nation from descending into chaos. However, divisions within the military are intensifying, and three power centres are reportedly emerging, each potentially led by a general. Power struggles within the Bangladesh military are not new, with over 20 coups recorded between the mid-1970s and early 1980s.
1. The current Chief of Army Staff, Waker-uz-Zaman, is considered moderate and still maintains control over the military. However, two additional power centres have surfaced within the ranks. According to sources familiar with the situation, one of these centres is led by Lieutenant General Mohammad Shaheenul Haque, who has the backing of Major General Mohammad Moin Khan of the Awami League-supported 9thDivision, regarded as the most powerful division in the Bangladesh military.
2. The second faction within the military is led by Lieutenant General Mohammad Faizur Rahman, who previously served as the head of the military intelligence agency.
